19 November 2008 // Local Activist: Forum Umwelt und Entwicklung (German NGO Network)
It was World Toilet Day in the International Year of Sanitation. Is it possible to make a day even more toilet-esque than this? Yes, it was. Passengers arriving at Berlin’s main train station on this particular day were in for a surprise. An outdoor auditorium with over 50 toilets as seats was set up outside the building, facing the German capital’s governmental quarter. At this public press conference the German NGO network "Forum on Environment and Development” presented a position paper to German State Secretary, Erich Stather. The NGOs demanded that the German government give sanitation more priority and help to create “100,000 sustainable toilets as role models” until World Toilet Day 2009. 10% of these facilities should be installed at strategic places (i.e. schools) in Germany – to also raise local awareness for new sanitation technologies. The event was organized for the Forum by the German Toilet Organization (GTO). Participating Forum partners were Women of Europe for a Common Future (WECF), Grüne Liga, Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA), SODI and Berliner Wassertisch. The event was made possible by the kind support of Hering Bau and the Innung SHK (guild for plumbing and heating services).
