Ongoing // Local Activist: German Toilet Organization (GTO)
”Klobalisierte Welt“ (“Toiletised World”) is an educational school project that the GTO runs in Berlin. Based on the methodology of participative development used in international development projects, Toiletised World’s main purpose is to get 13 – 16 year old students to think about the importance of good cooperation in order to successfully realise projects and, in particular, the importance of engaging all stakeholders early on in the process. Within this framework, the students work to address sanitation problems in their own school and in doing so learn about the importance of basic sanitation as well as developing their collaborative and presentational skills. Throughout the project the schools are supported by the GTO in the form of expertise, teaching materials and contacts.
The Toiletised World project culminates in a demonstration in Berlin’s city centre, organised by the GTO and participating schools and their students, in order to draw attention to the crisis in global saniation. In the past, Toiletised World has the used the occasion of the UN World Health Day and the World Toilet Day to stage their demonstrations at the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. Now in its third year, Toiletised World continues to draw global media attention.
