Bremen, Germany // 27 November – 01 December 2006 // Local Activist: Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association & German Toilet Organization
“Toilets?! … People need clean water. That’s much more important!”
The man glared through his dark brimmed glasses, appalled that anyone would go to the trouble of advocating sanitation.
The “toileteers” at the exhibition calmly explained that safe toilets protect drinking water resources. Certain sanitation systems can even produce renewable energy or increase food security by producing an excellent fertiliser. The discussion was interrupted by a woman with a red scarf walking towards the group. “Food is what people need to live, not toilets!”, the woman declared. The man with the dark glasses turned to her: “No, no, no. It’s not as simple as you think. Toilets help to produce fertiliser and improve water quality.” The “toileteers” smiled. Mission accomplished.
In Bremen, the main exhibition was shown in front of the city’s main train station. Some of the figures were also positioned to confront local politicians in front of city hall and set the scene for visitors at an international sanitation workshop hosted by the Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA).
