What started as a handful of successful GTO-organised events in 2005, 6 and 7, was transformed, with the support of UN-Water, into the international “Sanitation is Dignity” Campaign in 2008 – the International Year of Sanitation.
The campaign with its various components is carried out in public places and schools all over the globe.
A book and DVD documenting the international campaign activities will be released to pull together the contributions of people from around the world, and so demonstrate the ongoing importance of sanitation as a global issue.
The GTO has extended and continued its campaign since 2008 and has created a world wide “Sanitation is Dignity” movement.
“Where Would You Hide?” Exhibition
Bring the exhibition to your city or use the “Voices for Sanitation” supporter point
The German Toilet Organization (GTO) has initiated a worldwide awareness-raising and advocacy campaign for sanitation, and the “Where Would You Hide?” exhibition and “Voices for Sanitation” supporter point for one module of this work.
Tell me more about the exhibition and the Supporter Point … The exhibition consists of both figures and information elements, which can be effectively combined with the “Voices for Sanitation” Supporter Point. The Supporter Point is a tool to collect voices for sanitation from celebrities and the public. The Supporter Point can also be used independently from the exhibition.
What does it do? Through its placement in prominent public places in the middle of large cities, conference venues and other high-visibility locations around the world, The “Where Would You Hide?” exhibition raises public awareness in the developed world of the oft-neglected, or worse "taboo", issue of sanitation.
It places a spotlight on one of the most important, yet under-emphasised, basic human need: access to a toilet. The exhibition breaks the “toilet taboo” by teaching the public about the worldwide crisis in sanitation and advocates for the importance of sanitation, particularly to decision-makers. The “Voices for Sanitation” Supporter Point bundles statements from individuals into one strong and global call for sanitation.
Who can use it? The Exhibition and Supporter Point, like all elements of the “Sanitation is Dignity” Campaign, are available to all interested partners worldwide. Partners can organise and conduct their own locally implemented events and document their success.
How does the GTO support the partner?
- means of communication (designs for figures, backdrop, brochures, information material, website, etc.)
- guidance for implementation
- coordination with other campaigns and initiatives where possible

“My School Loo” School Contest
Now you can organise your own local “My School Loo” school contest
After the successes of the international “Sanitation is Dignity” Campaign the German Toilet Organization (GTO) has stepped up its efforts with the “My School Loo” school contest, a youth-oriented advocacy tool, which empowers children in regions with inadequate sanitation to voice their need for better access to sanitation.
Tell me more about the “My School Loo” school contest …
Hygiene awareness-raising materials are combined with a media effective contest format to provide children with knowledge and tools to encourage local and national decision-makers to take action to improve sanitation systems.
Child friendly and fun communication materials are used to teach children, through play, about the benefits of sanitation and hygiene. Teachers are provided with materials to accompany this process and organise the local contest activities, such as the poster contest “what would my life be like if I had a clean toilet?”.
What does it do?
The contest provides children with knowledge about sanitation and helps them to become ambassadors for the topic, within their community and beyond. By giving children these tools we help them to influence politicians and decision-makers in their region.
Who can participate?
Any organisation or school active in a region with inadequate sanitation can organise and carry out its own “My School Loo” school contest and document its success.
How does the GTO support the partner?
- teaching material for teachers
- educational material for children
- means of communication (contest promotion materials, press invitations, award cermony, brochures, information materials, website, etc.)
- guidance for implementation
- coordination with other school contests and initiatives where possible
